Microsoft is working on a new feature for Xbox that promises to reduce game download and installation times without players having to change any settings. The improvement will arrive transparently and will be integrated into the console’s system, automatically optimizing the way games and their updates are downloaded, as we mentioned yesterday.
Although at first glance the process will remain the same, the internal operation will change completely. The console will constantly analyze the best available route to download files, always looking for the fastest option at any given time.
The new system will automatically choose the fastest server
| Phase | What Xbox does | What the player notices |
|---|---|---|
| 1. You start the download | The installation or update process of the game begins. | You press “Install” as usual. |
| 2. Searches for available servers | The console identifies all servers from which it can download the content. | Everything happens in the background, without noticeable additional waits. |
| 3. Measures speed | It performs small connection tests with each server to check which one offers the highest speed. | You don’t have to configure anything manually. |
| 4. Chooses the best option | It automatically selects the server with the best performance at that time. | The download begins using the fastest available route. |
| 5. Monitors the connection | During the download, it periodically checks if there is a faster server. | The speed can remain more stable throughout the installation. |
| 6. Switches servers if necessary | If it detects a better connection, it automatically switches without interrupting the download. | The process continues transparently to try to reduce the total time. |
| 7. Completes the download | It completes the installation using the best available connection throughout the entire process. | The game or update finishes downloading as soon as possible according to your connection and server availability. |
When this feature reaches all users, the process will be completely automatic. When starting a download or update, Xbox will not start downloading all data immediately. Instead, the download client will first perform a quick check to identify which content servers are available. Then it will run small speed tests with each of them to measure which one offers the best performance from the player’s connection.
- Once the results are obtained, the console will automatically choose the fastest server and start the download using that route. The most interesting thing is that this check will not be performed only once.
Throughout the installation or update, Xbox will periodically repeat these tests to check if there is a server that can offer a higher speed. If it detects a better option, it will automatically switch to it to maintain the highest possible performance without the user having to intervene.
In practice, this should translate into faster downloads, especially for large games or updates that occupy tens of gigabytes. The entire process will take place in the background and without the need to modify the console’s settings, becoming an improvement that will benefit both those with very fast connections and those who depend on servers with more variable performance.
