The release of the official cover of Grand Theft Auto VI has allowed players to discover a multitude of details about the composition chosen by Rockstar Games. Among Jason, Lucía, and the secondary characters, there is an element that could go unnoticed by many, but that veteran fans have immediately recognized.
And that’s because, without making too much noise, Rockstar has decided to maintain a curious tradition that has accompanied the franchise for a quarter of a century and has survived almost all the main deliveries of the saga.
The helicopter continues to occupy its place in the Grand Theft Auto covers
If we observe the upper left corner of the Grand Theft Auto VI cover, we will find a helicopter flying over the scene. It’s not a casual detail. The presence of an aircraft in that specific position began with Grand Theft Auto III in 2001 and became a kind of visual identity seal when Vice City arrived in 2002.
Since then, the helicopter has appeared in:
- Grand Theft Auto III (2001)
- Grand Theft Auto Vice City (2002)
- Grand Theft Auto San Andreas (2004)
- Grand Theft Auto Liberty City Stories (2005)
- Grand Theft Auto Vice City Stories (2006)
- Grand Theft Auto IV (2008)
- Grand Theft Auto V (2013)
- Grand Theft Auto VI (2026)
The only major exception is Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, originally released for Nintendo DS, whose cover abandoned the classic mosaic design and, with it, the presence of the helicopter.
It’s small details like this that demonstrate how much Rockstar cares about the visual identity of the saga. Because while millions of players count the days to return to Vice City, the company continues to discreetly remember its roots and keep some of its longest-standing traditions alive.
