Microsoft wants to put an end to one of the most criticized aspects of Windows 11. The company has announced a major overhaul of the built-in search system, introducing a series of improvements aimed at providing faster, more accurate, and more useful results for users.
As reported by our colleagues at Windows Central, Microsoft has unveiled nine significant changes that are part of the evolution of Windows Search, an update that can already be tested in Insider versions and will be rolled out to the general public later this year.
These are the main new features of Windows Search
The update includes changes to both the internal functioning and the presentation of results. Among the confirmed improvements are:
| New Feature | What’s Changing |
|---|---|
| Local Results Priority | Files and applications on your device will appear before web results. |
| Less Promotional Content | A significant amount of promotional content from Bing and MSN will be removed from search results. |
| Improved Accuracy | Better recognition of typos and incorrectly written terms. |
| Clearer Results | The new interface makes it easier to find relevant content at a glance. |
| Faster Results | Optimizations to speed up searches across the system. |
| Better Organization | Results will be better categorized by relevance. |
| More Intuitive Experience | The search function has been simplified with a cleaner presentation. |
| Changes within the Windows K2 Project | The overhaul is part of the plan to modernize the operating system. |
| Available First for Insiders | The new features can already be tested in preliminary versions before their global release. |
Microsoft wants to address one of Windows’ biggest criticisms
For years, Windows’ built-in search has been criticized for providing irrelevant results, prioritizing web content over local files, and displaying promotional information that many users considered unnecessary.
With this overhaul, Microsoft aims to put the focus back on searches performed within the device itself, making it much faster and more efficient to locate applications, documents, or settings. For now, the new features are already available to some members of the Windows Insider program, while the rollout to all Windows 11 users is expected in the coming months.
