Rockstar Games has confirmed news that will spark a lot of discussion among collectors and fans of physical formats. Grand Theft Auto VI will not have a disc edition when it launches on November 19th. Although stores will sell physical versions of the game, inside the box, players will only find a download code.
The information has been revealed along with the details of the different game editions and the opening of reservations, scheduled for June 25th. In this way, Rockstar joins a trend that is becoming increasingly common in the industry, although, given that it’s one of the most anticipated releases in history, the decision has quickly generated debate.
GTA 6 boxes will include a download code
According to Rockstar, both the standard edition and the Ultimate Edition will be marketed in physical format, but neither will include a disc. Buyers will receive an official box with a code to download the game on Xbox Series.
Additionally, those who pre-order Grand Theft Auto VI will be able to start pre-loading the title on November 12th, a week before its official release on November 19th.
Although Rockstar has not explained the reasons for this decision in depth, several analysts point out that it could be related to protection against leaks. In previous releases, numerous physical copies arrived ahead of time in the hands of some players, allowing the publication of videos, images, and details before the scheduled date.
For now, a traditional physical edition with a disc has not been announced for a later date. The only confirmed thing is that the release of GTA 6 will take place exclusively through digital download, even for those who choose to buy a copy in box format.
