The internet never fails to deliver when it comes to creating curious situations. For years, a portion of the console gaming community criticized Xbox for lacking exclusive games like in the past. Now that Microsoft has regained its focus on console-exclusive games, a movement has emerged asking for the exact opposite.
Just days after Asha Sharma confirmed the return of exclusives to Xbox, some users have begun promoting a petition for Gears of War: E-Day to also arrive on PlayStation 5.
The community is calling for a PS5 version… of a game presented as an Xbox exclusive
The initiative argues that releasing the new Gears of War on PS5 would allow it to reach millions of additional players, improve the multiplayer community, and generate extra revenue to fund future installments in the series. Among the reasons cited, it’s also mentioned that many PlayStation users were recently able to try Gears of War: Reloaded, and that after this first contact, they “deserve to enjoy E-Day as well”.
The petition claims that a shared community would benefit online play thanks to cross-play and help maintain a more active player base over time.
Do as I say, not as I do
What’s striking about this situation is the timing. Xbox has just presented a new strategy that once again focuses on console exclusives as one of the brand’s defining features. In fact, the company itself has repeatedly emphasized that Gears of War: E-Day will be available on Xbox Series, PC, Steam, Xbox Cloud Gaming, and Xbox Play Anywhere, and will also be available from day one on Game Pass, so it’s not due to a lack of alternatives.
- It’s more than a little curious that, after years of hearing that Xbox needed more exclusive games to strengthen its ecosystem, campaigns are now emerging to break that exclusivity even before the game’s release.
Of course, any player can wish to enjoy a franchise on their favorite platform. But the situation has an undeniably ironic twist: Xbox regains one of its biggest exclusives, and almost immediately, a part of the internet is already organizing to ask for it to stop being exclusive. Totally surreal.
