After almost a day of incidents that affected thousands of players worldwide, Xbox has officially explained what caused the interruption of its online services. Although the problem did not affect all users equally, many players had difficulties logging in, accessing their digital library or running some of the games they had purchased.
The explanations come from Scott Van Vliet, responsible for the Xbox platform, who has publicly acknowledged that the situation was “unacceptable” and has promised greater transparency about the operation of the company’s services in the coming weeks.
A failure in an external licensing service triggered the incident
According to Xbox, the origin of the problem was not directly in Xbox Live, but in a licensing service that the platform depends on. When this system began to fail during the early morning hours, errors occurred in several essential processes.
- Failures when logging in with the Xbox account.
- Unable to display the complete game library.
- Errors when starting digital titles that required a license check.
- Problems that also affected some of Xbox’s publishing and distribution partners, so certain games were more affected than others.
Microsoft explains that its systems quickly detected the incident and declared a critical incident. After identifying the affected infrastructure, traffic was redirected to the systems that were still working while engineers worked to find the cause of the failure. However, the recovery was progressive and uneven across regions, which is why some players recovered the service several hours before others.
Van Vliet assures that Xbox is already conducting a thorough review of the incident and that the goal now is not only to identify the specific cause but also to prevent a single point of failure from leaving so many users without service again. Among the planned measures are reinforcing critical dependencies related to login and licenses, improving detection systems and accelerating both technical response and communication with players when a similar incident occurs again.
The executive also wanted to thank the community for their patience and the thousands of reports sent during the outage, assuring that the company “will do better” to prevent a situation like this from happening again.
Earlier today, many players began experiencing issues with sign in, enumerating their game libraries and playing games. The team has worked hard throughout the day to fix the issue, and we’ve restored service as of 2:30 PM PDT. Nonetheless, this is an unacceptable situation, and… https://t.co/3y9TjxzKls
