Microsoft could be on the verge of introducing one of the most significant features for the future of the Xbox ecosystem. After weeks of rumors about a system capable of converting physical games into digital licenses, an unexpected message addressed to Xbox Insiders program members has sparked speculation.

Although the company has not confirmed what it’s about, several insiders and specialized journalists believe the announcement would be related to the long-awaited disc-to-digital system, a feature that has been rumored to be one of the major bets for the next generation of Xbox for some time now, as seen in previous reports about the next Xbox generation.

Xbox hints that “the wait will be worth it”

Xbox Insiders program manager, Brad Rossetti, explained that this week they had stopped new test versions to prepare for what’s coming in the next few days.

As you’ve seen, this week we’ve paused new versions while we prepare for the next one. Thanks for your patience. The wait will be worth it, I promise.

The message doesn’t reveal any additional details, but it’s been enough to make the community start relating it to the rumors about “Positron”, the supposed codename for the system that would allow associating physical games with a digital license linked to the user’s account.

The theory has gained even more strength after Jez Corden, a Windows Central journalist and one of the sources that has revealed the most information about this feature, posted a brief message on social media: “Positron cometh” (“Positron is coming”).

If these rumors turn out to be true, Xbox could take a first step towards a much smoother transition between physical and digital formats. Additionally, the feature would fit with recent rumors about Project Helix, Microsoft’s next console, which has been speculated to utilize this system to facilitate players’ transition to the new generation.

For now, Microsoft has not officially confirmed what they will announce next week, but everything indicates that the next few days could be especially important for the future of the Xbox ecosystem and the digital libraries of its users.
