The size of the Grand Theft Auto VI map remains one of the biggest mysteries surrounding the highly anticipated Rockstar Games title as the release date approaches. Although players have been analyzing trailers and official images for months to try to reconstruct the state of Leonida, there is still no official confirmation on the actual dimensions of the setting.
Now, a former Rockstar Games producer has shared his vision on what we can expect. Based on the studio’s work over the past few decades, he believes the new open world will once again mark a significant leap from previous installments.
A former Rockstar producer expects a huge leap from GTA V
During an interview with the Kiwi Talkz podcast, former Rockstar producer John Ricchio explained that he doesn’t know the real size of the GTA 6 map, but he believes the studio’s trajectory allows us to anticipate a much more ambitious scenario. According to Ricchio, Rockstar has always followed the same philosophy with each new installment of their major franchises: creating larger, more detailed open worlds.
Every time they make a new GTA, it ends up being incredibly larger than the previous one. If I look at Rockstar’s history, I think the GTA 6 map will be truly enormous, of monstrous proportions.
The former developer added that even if the surface area doesn’t grow as much as players hope, the level of detail will more than make up for the difference.
Rockstar has always bet on evolving their open worlds
Ricchio recalled that this strategy was already seen with GTA IV, GTA V, and the two Red Dead Redemption installments, where Rockstar not only increased the scale of their scenarios but also the number of activities, characters, and interactive elements present in them.
- For now, Rockstar Games is keeping quiet about the official dimensions of Leonida, although the community continues to reconstruct the map from all the published material. In fact, fans recently managed to identify 97 different vehicles just by analyzing the two trailers and the screenshots shared by the company, a testament to the enormous level of detail that the game seems to hide.
With Grand Theft Auto VI scheduled for November 19, 2026, it’s likely that Rockstar will release new updates in the coming months. That’s when players will be able to get a much more accurate idea of an open world that, according to those who know the studio best, could become the largest and most detailed in the entire history of the saga.
