Recent rumors about the supposed change in PlayStation’s strategy regarding PC releases continue to generate a lot of conversation within the industry, and now Digital Foundry has left a reflection that is particularly catching the attention of Xbox players.
According to the latest information shared by Jason Schreier, Sony has decided to slow down the adaptation of some of its major narrative exclusives for PS5 to PC. Although the company has not made any official announcement, the issue is already causing multiple interpretations about the real reason behind this move.
Digital Foundry relates Sony’s move to the future of Xbox
Digital Foundry described this possible decision by Sony as a “defensive measure against Project Helix“, the future hybrid ecosystem that Microsoft is preparing for the next generation.
The theory is based on a simple idea: if Xbox ends up betting on a system much more integrated with Windows and PC, PlayStation games released on Steam or Windows could end up working indirectly within the Xbox environment.
Precisely for this reason, some analysts consider that Sony may be trying to reinforce the value of the PlayStation console as a closed platform, preventing its major exclusives from expanding too far outside its ecosystem. All this comes at a particularly important time for Microsoft, which continues to go through a strong transformation phase under the new direction of Asha Sharma:
- Progressive rebranding of Xbox to XBOX
- Changes in Game Pass
- Multiplatform strategy still not well defined
- Development of Project Helix
- Greater integration between console and PC
For now, neither company has officially confirmed this supposed strategic clash, although it is clear that the next generation is starting to move important pieces within the entire industry. And seeing how Sony and Microsoft seem to be taking increasingly different paths, the next few years could end up redefining the relationship between console, PC, and exclusives.
