Despite Avowed being one of the most recent RPGs in the Xbox catalog, it seems that Obsidian Entertainment has already started working on its sequel. The information comes from Chris Avellone, co-founder of the studio and one of the most recognized figures in the genre, who has stated that Avowed 2 is currently in an early development phase.
Although Microsoft and Obsidian have not made any official announcements, the statements have quickly sparked the interest of the community. In addition to confirming the existence of the project, Avellone has also shared some details about the team that would be behind this new installment.
Avowed 2 would change creative direction within Obsidian
According to Avellone, Obsidian continues to work on several projects simultaneously while maintaining support for Grounded 2. Among those developments would be Avowed 2, although with an important difference compared to the original game.
According to his statements, Carrie Patel would not be directing the sequel, and creative leadership would have passed to George Ziets, a veteran developer known for his work on classic RPGs like Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer.
- Avellone also denied that Josh Sawyer was in charge of the project, clarifying that his involvement would be similar to what he had during the development of the first Avowed. At the same time, he pointed out that Obsidian is still developing other projects unrelated to the franchise, although he did not offer more details about it.
- The statements come at a particularly busy time for Xbox, with rumors about possible internal reorganizations and changes in several Microsoft studios. Avellone himself commented that some teams are pending how these decisions could affect their future projects.
For now, Avowed 2 has not been officially announced, so it’s best to take all this information with caution. Even so, if the veteran developer’s words are correct, it seems that Xbox is already preparing the return of one of its most recent role-playing franchises.
