GTA is one of the most popular sagas in video game history. Millions of players use these three letters daily to refer to the Rockstar Games franchise, but the truth is that not everyone knows the meaning behind them or the origin of the original name.

With GTA 6 just a few months away from its release, curiosity about the series is once again at an all-time high, and many players have rediscovered the origin of the initials that have been accompanying the industry since the late 1990s.

What does the “A” in GTA stand for?

The GTA initials correspond to Grand Theft Auto, an expression used in the Anglo-Saxon legal sphere to refer to motor vehicle theft. Therefore:

• T = Theft
• A = Auto

The letter A refers to Auto, meaning automobile or vehicle, an element that has always been at the core of the franchise.

This is no coincidence.
