Bungie needs to make a move with Marathon and it seems the studio has already decided how to give its extraction shooter a new boost. After weeks of complications for the game and a community quite critical of several aspects of the current experience, the company has confirmed a major free initiative coinciding with the start of Season 2.
For several days, any player will be able to access the game completely free on Xbox Series, PS5, and PC, something that many already interpret as Bungie’s first major attempt to regain interest in the project.
Marathon will be free for several days with the premiere of Season 2
The new season, called Nightfall, will begin on June 2nd and will bring with it an “Open Game Week” that will last until June 9th. During this period, players will be able to try the full game for free, and all progress made will be saved to continue later if they finally purchase the title.
- In addition to free access, Bungie is preparing several important changes within Season 2. One of the most striking will be a new nighttime version of the The Marsh map, which will completely change the usual experience, betting on a much darker atmosphere and focused on survival and light management.
A new class called Sentinel will also arrive, focused especially on defense, area protection, and combat control. Bungie has also confirmed a complete reset of progression and equipment for all players at the start of the season. The idea is to balance the experience again and allow both new and veteran users to start from scratch on an equal footing.
Along with this, the studio promises significant quality-of-life improvements, including faster progression, expanded storage, and adjustments to various contracts and systems that had generated frustration within the community. At Generación Xbox, we will be attentive to see if this new strategy really manages to change the situation of Marathon, especially now that Bungie is going through one of the most delicate moments of the last few years after the closure of Destiny 2 content.
