Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has been one of those games that sparks debate after completing it, especially when it comes to its endings. And now we know that conversation won’t be closing anytime soon, at least not officially. According to Sandfall Interactive’s team, there won’t be a canonical ending, not even in future games.
The information comes from an interview published by IGN, where one of the script’s responsible parties has made the studio’s stance clear: the story will remain open and will always depend on the player’s choice.
Clair Obscur won’t have an official ending, not even in its sequel
The studio explains that they never intended to create a “true” or completely happy ending. Instead, they opted for two distinct endings, both valid, with significant consequences and different tones.
The most striking aspect is that, even while working on a sequel within the same universe, they have no intention of choosing one as official. They define it as a “Schrödinger’s ending“, where both possibilities exist at the same time, depending on the player’s perspective.
This means that any future game set in this world will have to coexist with that ambiguity, something unusual in sagas that continue their story. A decision that reinforces the game’s focus: allowing each player to build their own version of what happened.
