The presentation of Project Helix, the next generation of Xbox consoles, has put the focus on an idea that Microsoft has been preparing for years: a device capable of combining console and PC within the same ecosystem. Although the project has gained prominence recently, new information indicates that this strategy is not new within the company.
According to journalist Tom Warren from The Verge, the concept behind Project Helix is part of a plan that Microsoft began to explore about a decade ago. The company had been working on the convergence between Xbox and Windows for years, something that is now taking definitive shape.
The Xbox-PC hybrid strategy started over ten years ago
The term “Project Helix” was already being used internally at Microsoft years ago to describe a long-term strategy focused on unifying the Xbox and Windows ecosystems.
This doesn’t mean that the current console has been in development for ten years, but rather that the technological idea and strategic direction began during the Xbox One cycle.
The first steps
One of the first steps towards this integration came in 2015, when Microsoft began to bring the Xbox operating system closer to the Windows 10 environment through a shared architecture known as OneCore. This move allowed both platforms to share development tools and part of their software infrastructure.
- Over the years, Microsoft has reinforced this vision with common technologies between PC and console, such as DirectStorage or Velocity Architecture, designed to improve performance and facilitate multi-platform development.
In this context, Project Helix would represent the culmination of this strategy, with a system designed to connect console and PC experiences more deeply within the Xbox ecosystem.
