Over the past few hours, Take-Two Interactive has released new information for investors that, without directly mentioning Microsoft, allows us to accurately outline the current state of the new-generation console market. And that’s where Xbox Series comes in.
In one of the slides from the report, the company talks about 138 million active ninth-generation consoles worldwide by the end of 2025. This only includes PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series, leaving out Nintendo Switch as it’s considered a hybrid system in a different category. From there, the math speaks for itself.
Xbox Series has already sold around 50 million consoles
According to the breakdown handled by analysts and specialized communities, PlayStation 5 would be in the range of 88 to 90 million units, while Xbox Series X and Series S would add up to 48 to 50 million globally.
This aligns with the historical evolution of the Xbox Series family, which has never had public sales tracking from Microsoft, but rather indirect references through market studies, third-party publishers, and financial documents like this one. Take-Two, responsible for franchises like Grand Theft Auto or Red Dead Redemption, uses this data to justify the market size for launches like GTA 6.

The important nuance is that the figure doesn’t talk about distributed consoles, but rather active installed base, meaning systems that are still in use. This reinforces the idea that Xbox Series maintains a solid and stable presence, especially considering the growing weight of Xbox Game Pass, cloud gaming, and the shared ecosystem with PC.
With these numbers on the table, it’s clear that Xbox enters the final stretch of the generation with tens of millions of active players, a particularly relevant fact considering the major releases scheduled for 2026 and beyond. Although Microsoft doesn’t release official figures, the market is starting to speak for itself.
