For some time now, it’s been an open secret that the next Xbox will take a definitive step towards Windows, becoming a kind of living room PC designed for gaming. What’s still unclear is how Microsoft plans to execute this plan and if the expected timeline is really viable with all the implications of this change of direction.

According to the latest information, the new generation of Xbox won’t arrive before late 2027, at the earliest. This would put its release quite far away, in a window that Microsoft would be using to completely redefine the traditional concept of a console, aligning it even more with the PC ecosystem and services.
An Xbox with Windows and many questions to be answered
The idea of an Xbox working like a fully Windows-based PC fits with Microsoft’s recent moves: full integration with Xbox Game Pass, greater compatibility with stores and apps, and a more flexible experience between console and computer. However, putting this into practice is no trivial matter.
Part of this information started to take shape at the same time as the first details of the Project Kennan were revealed, now known as Xbox Ally, which reinforces the feeling that Microsoft is building a unified ecosystem rather than a traditional console. Even so, it’s recognized from within that it’s unclear if the goal of late 2027 is still realistic.
- The big question is whether this timeframe will be enough to have hardware, operating system, game compatibility, and user experience perfectly aligned. A Windows-based Xbox promises many advantages, but it also requires resolving significant challenges to avoid losing the console identity that has always defined the brand.
For now, we have to wait for Microsoft to start making official moves. Until then, everything suggests that the next Xbox will be very different from what we know, although its final form is still far from being finalized.
