It’s hard to believe, but it’s already been 40 years since Rare started its journey creating gems like Battletoads, Banjo-Kazooie, or, more recently, Sea of Thieves. To celebrate this special story, the British studio has teamed up with 8BitDo to launch a commemorative controller that goes straight to the heart of its fans.
And beware, it’s not just a simple redesign of the official Xbox controller. Instead, they’ve opted for a very particular model: 8BitDo’s Ultimate Controller, which not only catches the eye with its blue finish and gold details but also includes high-end features and a nostalgic touch with the 40th-anniversary logo engraved.
A playable tribute to everything Rare represents
Visually, the controller is a delight: intense blue, gold buttons, a skull design in tribute to Sea of Thieves, and an aesthetic combination that screams Rare from all sides. But the best part is that it’s not just superficial. This controller comes with Hall effect joysticks, 2.4 GHz or wired connectivity, charging station, programmable rear buttons, and compatibility with almost everything: Xbox Series, Xbox One, PC, Android, iOS, and even Apple TV.
- Everything comes packaged with care, including a USB adapter, joycaps, charging cable, and software support to customize profiles to your liking. The only downside is that, for now, it’s only available for pre-order on Amazon US for $89.99. There’s no confirmed release date for Europe, but if you’re interested, you’ll need to stay tuned.
A small indulgence, yes, but also a nod to those who have been enjoying what Rare has built for years. And if you’re one of those who gets excited remembering Perfect Dark, Conker, or Viva Piñata, this controller is not just another accessory: it’s a way to celebrate part of your history as a player.
