More attentive Xbox Store users have discovered a small change that could be more significant than it seems. Some highlighted and recent titles like Gears of War: E-Day or Halo: Campaign Evolved have started to display a new label called “Xbox Handheld” within the “Ways to play” section.
This novelty has caught attention because, although Xbox already indicated compatibility with handheld devices, it had never done so with such a specific denomination. This has been enough for part of the community to wonder if Microsoft is preparing something beyond the current ROG Xbox Ally.
The “Xbox Handheld” label could be more than just a simple tag
The appearance of the new icon is reminiscent of the verification system used by Steam with Steam Deck, but in this case, some media outlets, such as Windows Central, consider that the name chosen by Microsoft could reinforce rumors about a handheld console developed by the company itself.
However, the most likely explanation is much simpler. Microsoft could be identifying games that offer an experience especially adapted to handheld devices, in line with its Xbox Play Anywhere strategy and the growing prominence of the new ROG Xbox Ally.
In any case, it’s interesting that the company has chosen to use the term “Xbox Handheld” specifically, a choice that has not gone unnoticed among fans. For now, there is no confirmation of a handheld console from Xbox, but it’s clear that a small icon in the Store has been enough to reactivate one of the most recurring rumors surrounding the brand’s future.
