The possibility of GTA 6 running at 60 FPS on consoles remains one of the most debated topics among gamers. While Rockstar maintains its silence on the game’s definitive performance, one of the most experienced voices in the franchise has shared his opinion, and it’s not particularly optimistic.

This comes from Obbe Vermeij, former technical director at Rockstar North and one of the developers who worked on several titles in the Grand Theft Auto series. He believes that the studio will likely prioritize offering the best possible visuals over doubling the frame rate.
Rockstar Would Prioritize Visual Fidelity Over 60 FPS
According to Vermeij, everything points to Rockstar aiming to maximize the graphical potential of current consoles. To achieve this, he thinks the studio will give priority to aspects like visual fidelity, lighting, world density, and the level of detail in the city over reaching a stable 60 FPS.
- In his opinion, maintaining a 30 FPS experience would allow for a much more complex and spectacular world, which aligns with the philosophy Rockstar has historically followed in its major productions.
Still, a Surprise Can’t Be Ruled Out
Despite his skepticism, Vermeij doesn’t completely rule out the possibility. The former developer acknowledges that Rockstar is one of the most advanced studios in the industry from a technical standpoint and states that 60 FPS could be possible if the team has “something magical” up their sleeve.
For now, Rockstar hasn’t confirmed the graphical modes for GTA 6, so we’ll have to wait for more details to find out if the game will offer a performance mode on Xbox Series and PlayStation 5 or if, as the former technical director believes, the priority will be to take the visuals to the maximum level possible.
