With Grand Theft Auto VI reservations underway and the various editions officially presented, many players have started looking back to compare the current offer with that of previous installments in the saga. The contrast with Grand Theft Auto IV is particularly striking, as the special edition released in 2008 is still one of the most remembered by collectors.

The situation has reopened the debate about the value of physical format and how premium editions have changed over the years. If before the focus was on collectible objects, now the weight of rewards is mainly found in digital content.

From metal boxes and physical extras to digital content

The Special Edition of Grand Theft Auto IV included numerous physical items that made it a highly sought-after piece. Among them were a metal box in the shape of a safe, an art book, the soundtrack on CD, a Rockstar keychain with the keys to a safe deposit box and an exclusive travel bag, in addition to the game in physical format.

In contrast, the Ultimate Edition of Grand Theft Auto VI takes a completely different approach. Its main attraction is the additional content for the game, such as exclusive vehicles, special weapons, clothing, tattoos, businesses, additional missions, and other rewards that will be unlocked during Jason and Lucia’s adventure.

• All this is added to another detail that has generated debate among fans: the physical launch copies do not include a disc, but a download code inside the box. A decision that has been widely commented on by the community and symbolizes the change of direction that the industry has taken.

Meanwhile, the special edition of GTA IV continues to appreciate among collectors and can be found on the second-hand market for figures that, depending on its state of conservation, far exceed its original price.
