Since Xbox confirmed that Gears of War: E-Day will be an exclusive console release for their platform, numerous rumors have emerged about a supposed PlayStation 5 version that was allegedly canceled at the last minute. The theory gained momentum after various leaks and comments related to Microsoft’s new strategy.
However, recent statements from Xbox and The Coalition officials point in a very different direction: that version was never part of the studio’s plans.
The Coalition assures that they never worked on a PS5 version
In a recent interview, Matt Searcy, The Coalition’s creative director, explained that the studio never discussed a PlayStation 5 release and that, to his knowledge, the project’s situation has not changed. His words coincide with other messages released in recent days by Xbox officials, who have also cast doubt on the rumors of a last-minute cancellation.
The confusion has been fueled by different reports that emerged after the Xbox Games Showcase and by the change in strategy that the company is experiencing regarding its exclusives. However, official sources insist that Gears of War: E-Day has always been planned as a release for Xbox and PC.
The game, developed by The Coalition, has become one of Xbox’s major projects for the coming months and will mark the return of one of the brand’s most important franchises. Its release is scheduled for October 6, 2026, and will be one of the titles that will reinforce Microsoft’s new focus on console exclusives.
For now, everything suggests that the rumors about a hypothetical PS5 edition are part of the many speculations surrounding Xbox’s change of direction, but there is no official indication that this version was ever in development.
