Xbox is entering a new era, and its top executive has made it clear what the goal is. During an interview with Bloomberg Tech, Xbox’s new CEO, Asha Sharma, shared a statement that hasn’t gone unnoticed by the community, reflecting Microsoft’s ambition for the next few years.
At a time when Xbox is expanding its presence beyond traditional consoles, betting on PC, cloud, portable devices, and new distribution models, Sharma wanted to send a clear message about the company’s priorities.
Xbox aims to lead the entire interactive entertainment industry
During the interview, Asha Sharma explained that her focus at the helm of Xbox isn’t solely on traditional financial results or the usual margins of other tech divisions.
My mandate is not 30% margins, it’s not software business margins, it’s being the number one gaming and entertainment company, and that’s what we’re going to do.
- Sharma’s words come at a particularly active time for Xbox. In recent years, Microsoft has significantly strengthened its catalog thanks to Xbox Game Studios, Bethesda, and Activision Blizzard, while also boosting services like Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Cloud Gaming.
The statement also seems to align with the strategy the company has been developing over time: taking Xbox to any possible screen and expanding its reach far beyond traditional hardware. The recent push for Xbox Play Anywhere, the arrival of new portable devices, and the growing integration between console, PC, and cloud are examples of this vision.
- Although it remains to be seen how this ambition will translate into future announcements and releases, the new CEO’s words make it clear that Microsoft doesn’t plan to settle for its current position. The goal is much broader: to make Xbox the main reference point for the video game and interactive entertainment sector globally.
With the Xbox Games Showcase just around the corner and several important projects in development, it seems that the company wants to back up these statements with facts over the next few months.
