The new Xbox, codenamed Project Helix, has surprised with its hybrid approach between console and PC, but the truth is that this idea is not new within Microsoft. According to recent revelations, the company had this concept in mind over two decades ago.
The information, gathered by Windows Central, reveals that the original plan for the first Xbox was very different from what ultimately hit the market. And, curiously, it aligns quite well with what’s being proposed now.
The original Xbox was going to be a PC with Windows disguised as a console
According to Ed Fries, former Microsoft vice president of game publishing, the initial idea was to create a machine that would function like a Windows PC but in a console format. This would have allowed for a more open environment, similar to what’s expected from Project Helix. However, the main problem at the time was the available hardware, especially memory.
As he explained, resources were very limited, and dedicating part of the system to a more complex environment like Windows would have meant sacrificing performance in games. So, Microsoft decided to opt for a more closed and optimized architecture, prioritizing game performance above all else.
Now, over 20 years later, the situation is very different. With much more powerful devices and more available memory, the original idea makes sense again. Project Helix is aiming for exactly that: a machine capable of combining the best of a console with the flexibility of a PC.
If this approach is confirmed, we would be witnessing the materialization of a concept that Microsoft already tried to make a reality in the early days of Xbox, but which the technology of the time did not allow to develop as planned.
