Microsoft has taken advantage of the GDC 2026 to announce a significant improvement for ROG Xbox Ally, the portable device of the Xbox ecosystem developed in conjunction with ASUS. The company has confirmed that the device will receive Automatic Super Resolution (ASR), an artificial intelligence-based technology that promises to significantly improve performance in games.
Automatic Super Resolution has been available on Windows 11 since 2024, but over the past few years, Microsoft has continued to evolve this technology to better adapt it to different devices, including the ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X family.
Intelligent scaling that doesn’t require extra work from developers
One of the main advantages of ASR is that it works at the operating system level, which means that developers don’t need to modify their games to take advantage of this improvement.
The technology uses the integrated NPU in the device’s hardware to apply intelligent scaling techniques similar to those used by systems like DLSS or FSR. Thanks to this, Microsoft ensures that it is possible to increase the framerate by up to 30% while maintaining the same graphics settings and resource consumption.
ASR will be compatible with games that use DirectX 11 and DirectX 12, which opens the door to improvements in a large number of titles.
Forza Horizon 6 is used as a technical demonstration
During one of the GDC panels in San Francisco, Microsoft showed a technical demo of Automatic Super Resolution working on ROG Xbox Ally using a build of Forza Horizon 6.
In the comparative video presented at the event, it was possible to observe how the technology allows for improved game performance while maintaining a very similar visual quality, demonstrating the potential of this AI-based scaling system.
Arrives in April on ROG Xbox Ally devices
Microsoft also confirmed that the public preview version of Automatic Super Resolution will arrive in April on devices from the ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X family.
With this update, the company aims to improve the experience on portable devices within the Xbox ecosystem, especially in demanding games that can benefit from intelligent scaling and optimization technologies using AI.
