Bungie warns in Marathon: permanent and immediate expulsion for cheaters

Bungie has published an extensive statement explaining how they plan to combat cheating in Marathon, and the message is clear: zero tolerance. In an extraction shooter, encountering a cheater not only ruins the match, but also means losing loot and progress, so the studio wants to cut the problem off at the root from day one.

Although there won’t be a radical change in the anti-cheating system compared to what’s seen in Destiny 2, the team assures that they have specific tools and processes to protect the competitive ecosystem.

Immediate Permanent Ban and Dedicated Servers in Marathon

The most drastic measure is the policy of immediate permanent ban as soon as cheating is detected, regardless of the player’s history. Bungie aims to send a clear message and avoid any perception of leniency.

The game will feature dedicated servers and monitoring systems designed to detect abnormal behavior and limit the use of external software. Elements of the game’s design, such as fog and reduced visibility in certain areas, will also make it harder to use practices like long-distance wallhacks.

Additionally, Bungie is not just targeting traditional cheats: they will also go after those who exploit glitches to alter the game’s economy, such as item duplication. On the other hand, a reconnection system will be implemented, and if the disconnection is due to a server issue, the lost team will be restored.
