Epic Games has kicked off 2026 with an unexpected surprise for part of the Fortnite community. As of today, numerous players are receiving a brand-new free pet, which is automatically added to their inventory upon login.

This is Kitsune, an elegant fox-shaped pet that can accompany you during matches and also comes with customization options. It’s not just any ordinary item, and that’s why not all users are receiving it automatically.
A reward tied to vintage Fortnite content
Epic Games has confirmed that this pet is being given exclusively to players who previously unlocked a specific item. Kitsune is directly related to a cosmetic accessory released in the game’s early years, specifically a decorative backpack obtained by completing the Battle Pass of Season X, Chapter 1.
As it’s a direct evolution of that classic item, the studio has decided to reward those who have it in their locker by gifting them the pet version. This is a practice Epic has applied before when reusing or expanding on old cosmetics.
How to know if you get it for free
If you meet the requirements, the process is fully automatic:
-
You just need to launch Fortnite
-
Even before reaching the main menu, a full-screen message will appear, notifying you that the Kitsune pet has been added to your account
-
From there, you can access the pets section and customize it to your liking
In case you don’t meet the conditions, Epic Games has announced that Kitsune will arrive in the store in the coming days, this time as a paid item.
A nod to veteran Fortnite Chapter 7 players, who continue to see Epic revive and revalue the game’s historical content with new formats.
