The cinematic adaptation of Gears of War is moving forward, and it’s doing so with the help of David Leitch, the director known for Deadpool 2 and Bullet Train. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, both he and his partner and producer Kelly McCormick confirmed that they are already working on the script alongside Jon Spaihts, the screenwriter of Dune. The information comes from an exclusive interview published by The Hollywood Reporter.
According to McCormick, the involvement of The Coalition and Netflix’s own enthusiasm are setting the pace for the project. Additionally, she noted that this work is part of a broader strategy, as a new game in the saga is scheduled for release in 2026. Although the movie won’t be ready in time to coincide with that date, the producers are looking to link the release to the franchise’s return to consoles in some way.
A War-Torn and Sci-Fi Vision for Gears of War
Kelly McCormick explained that this production represents a unique opportunity for David Leitch:
This is a chance for David to make a war movie, something he hasn’t been able to direct before, and also to put his own spin on a sci-fi universe with a beloved saga like Gears of War.
New Details:
-
Confirmed Director: David Leitch (John Wick, Deadpool 2, Hobbs & Shaw).
-
Screenwriter: Jon Spaihts (Dune, Doctor Strange), currently working on the script.
-
Active Collaboration: Netflix is developing the project alongside The Coalition, the studio responsible for the saga.
-
Expected Timeline: it won’t arrive in parallel with the new Gears of War game scheduled for 2026, but they’re looking to release it around the same time to capitalize on the relevance.
-
Genre Focus: Leitch wants to make his own version of a war movie with sci-fi elements, adapted to the brutality and tone of the saga.
-
Energy Behind the Project: both The Coalition and Netflix are pushing hard to make the movie just as significant as the upcoming video game.
The project continues in active development, with a focus on respecting the brutal tone and dark atmosphere that define the Xbox saga. The goal of those responsible is to bring not only the action and spectacle to the big screen but also the emotional depth that has made Gears of War one of the pillars of the Xbox brand.
