Call of Duty players are well aware that installing the game can be a significant challenge for storage, especially on consoles with limited space. However, this situation is about to improve (at least temporarily) thanks to a restructuring that Activision is applying to the saga’s launcher, coinciding with preparations for the release of Black Ops 7.
As of today, Modern Warfare II and Modern Warfare III become standalone downloads, separating from the main Call of Duty installation. This means that the content of both games will no longer be integrated into the modern COD app, reducing the overall weight of the package. The measure will take effect on August 7th, when all legacy content from MW2 and MW3 will be removed from the main launcher.
What’s changing exactly and why?
As of July 29th, Activision has begun to separate the files of the franchise’s most recent titles. This not only implies a cleaner download for current users but also allows players to choose what to install without having to load unnecessary gigabytes.
-
MW2 and MW3 become fully independent games.
-
They will no longer be installed as part of the central COD launcher.
-
The total weight of the main app will be significantly reduced on Xbox consoles.
This move comes at a strategic moment, just as Black Ops 7 starts to appear on the horizon. Everything indicates that the new game developed by Treyarch will be integrated into Activision’s unified platform as soon as it’s available, which will likely increase the total size of the app again.
- Although there’s no official release date yet, all indications point to a Black Ops 7 release in November 2025, probably in the second half of the month. With several Xbox exclusives scheduled for October, the company would have room to give more prominence to this new Call of Duty during the last stretch of the year.
At Generación Xbox, we’ll keep you informed about any additional changes to the launcher, installation sizes, or final release dates for Black Ops 7. For now, it’s time to free up disk space and get ready for the next infiltration.
