Since Microsoft completed the acquisition of Activision Blizzard, a question has been lingering among players: when will World of Warcraft arrive on Xbox consoles? The oldest MMORPG on the market has had full controller support for some time, fueling hopes of seeing a native version on consoles. However, everything indicates that for now, it’s not in the studio’s immediate plans.
In a recent interview with Windows Central, the game’s director, Ion Hazzikostas, made it clear that the team is not actively working on a console version. “If we were developing World of Warcraft for consoles or other platforms, we would say so openly. But our focus remains on the PC experience,” the creative explained. A message that cools, at least for now, the expectations of Xbox users.
The next Xbox console could change the game rules
Although Blizzard is keeping quiet, rumors about the capabilities of the new generation of Xbox consoles have intensified in recent months, especially regarding support for running PC games from different stores. If this feature is confirmed, World of Warcraft could run natively without the need for a console-specific version, opening the door to other titles.
- Additionally, various leaks within the game’s files suggest that the next expansion, Midnight, could be released in March 2026, with a prior patch scheduled for the 9th of that month. This period would coincide with Microsoft’s plans to unveil its new hardware, which would fit with the idea of a more direct integration between PC and Xbox.
For now, console players will have to keep waiting to enjoy the world of Azeroth outside of streaming, but everything points to the fact that the future of World of Warcraft could pass, sooner rather than later, through the new generation of Xbox.
