It’s not uncommon for titles with several years under their belt to shut down their servers, especially in free-to-play productions with little traction. What’s striking in this case is that we’re talking about a premium game released recently, and its online features’ closure date has already been confirmed.
This refers to WWE 2K25, the latest installment in the official WWE-licensed wrestling franchise. Although there’s no announcement yet about the future WWE 2K26, expected to arrive at some point in 2026, 2K has confirmed that WWE 2K25’s servers will go offline on March 14, 2027. This decision has sparked debate, as it’s a title where many users have not only invested in the initial purchase but also in microtransactions linked to the MyTeam mode, inspired by dynamics similar to those of Ultimate Team in EA Sports FC 26.
Other scheduled closures in 2K games
The case of WWE 2K25 is not isolated. On the official 2K website, several dates are already listed for server shutdowns in different sports franchises:

A move that sparks debate
The fact that the closure of a recently released game is being announced so far in advance is generating a lot of discussion among players. On the one hand, it provides transparency, as users know exactly how long they can enjoy the online features. On the other hand, it makes it clear that even in paid titles, the online experience has an expiration date.
It’s not ruled out that, following this trend, other companies will start marking the closure dates of their games’ servers in advance.
