Sony has confirmed the closure of Bluepoint Games, the studio behind the remake of Demon’s Souls on PS5. The decision, which had been rumored in recent hours, has been officially announced and the team will cease its activity next March.
Bluepoint joined the PlayStation Studios family in September 2021, after having developed two highly acclaimed remakes: Demon’s Souls in 2020 and previously Shadow of the Colossus on PS4. In recent years, they collaborated on God of War Ragnarök and were working on a service project that was canceled in January 2025.
Industry Closures: When Criticism Isn’t Always Consistent
The decision, announced internally by Hermen Hulst, is justified as part of a resource reorganization to face future market challenges. The message itself talks about optimization within PlayStation Studios in a complex economic context, although it insists that the company maintains a solid lineup of releases for 2026.
Beyond the impact on employees and the industry, the closure reopens an uncomfortable debate. Every time Microsoft announces the closure of a studio, criticisms multiply on social media and specialized outlets. However, when similar moves come from Sony’s side, the tone is often different or much more moderate.
The reality is that closures hurt, regardless of the logo on the facade. The industry is going through a phase of deep adjustments, project cancellations, and strategic restructuring in almost all major companies. What happened with Bluepoint is not an isolated case, but rather another example that the sector is experiencing a transition period where no platform is immune.
