Update
- When a console player enables cross-play, the matchmaking will prioritize matching with other console players. However, all players from all platforms will be in the same matchmaking queue, so you may still encounter PC players. On the other hand, if you play on PC, you won’t have the option to disable crossplay.
Original News
The upcoming Battlefield 6 continues to make headlines less than a month before its release, and this time the news comes in relation to multiplayer. According to Matthew Nickerson, senior combat designer for consoles at Battlefield Studios, the game will have cross-play enabled by default from the start, although with some important nuances for those playing on Xbox and PlayStation.
The system won’t be a full cross-play like in other shooters. In Nickerson’s words during an interview with IGN, the matchmaking on consoles will prioritize Xbox and PlayStation players, and only if the server can’t fill up in a reasonable time, it will look to complete the match with PC users.
A Flexible Matchmaking System
In Battlefield 6, console players will have a toggle switch on screen to enable or disable cross-play, without having to dig through complex menus. This is a decision that, according to the team, aims to give more control and comfort to the user:
“What we have on consoles is a simple toggle that’s directly in the game. Not all products that launch offer that from the start,” Nickerson explained.
This approach also aims to balance the experience. Although PC may have some advantages in precision thanks to the use of mouse and keyboard, the default system ensures that console players compete with each other first, maintaining an active user base and at the same time giving room to those who want to expand their scope to PC.
