Toshiro Mifune, the late actor, is the actor who brings the protagonist of Onimusha: Way of the Sword to life, a fact that we had already revealed a few months ago when Capcom officially confirmed the rumor. The news is the difficult path the developer had to take to obtain the rights to the late artist’s appearance.
Satoru Nihei, the game’s director, and Akihito Kadowaki confessed in an interview that the title has been in development since 2020. At that time, the idea of putting Mifune in the main role emerged because they wanted the image of a recognized samurai who looked young and fierce even in battles where he was covered in mud and blood.

For those who don’t know much about Japanese cinema, Mifune worked on many films of the renowned Japanese director Akira Kurosawa, including cuts like Rashomon and Yojimbo. In most of them, Mifune played a samurai of great stature and sagacity, exactly what is sought in the protagonist of what will be the reboot of the Onimusha saga.
The game still does not have a specific release date but it is confirmed that it will arrive on Xbox Series X/S at some point in 2026
