Obsidian has taken one of its most surprising steps in years by bringing back Tim Cain, one of the most influential names in modern RPGs and creator of Fallout. The veteran designer returns to the studio as a full-time employee, a move that opens the door to new possibilities within Xbox Game Studios.
The announcement comes amidst the fervor surrounding the success of the Fallout series and the renewed interest in its post-apocalyptic worlds. However, Cain himself has made it clear that his return is not related to a sequel or any known remasters. His contribution is focused on a completely new project, which, according to him, no one can guess.
An unexpected return to Obsidian and a still-secret project
In a video published on his YouTube channel, Tim Cain confirms that he is returning to Obsidian as an internal member of the studio, not as an external consultant. This marks his first full-time stint in five years, and it comes at a time when the company is handling multiple developments under the Xbox umbrella.
The most striking aspect is the level of secrecy surrounding his new work. Cain mentions that he has signed a strict confidentiality agreement and emphasizes that the game he is involved in is not part of Fallout 5 nor the rumored revision of Fallout: New Vegas. Everything points to a completely new IP, a direction that fits with the designer’s creative history and the breadth of projects that Obsidian typically handles.
