In recent hours, multiple readings have circulated about a recent interview with Obsidian, but it’s worth focusing on the real message the studio is conveying: adjusting expectations, long-term planning, and internal stability. Far from an alarmist scenario, the conversation paints a picture of a team that’s frankly analyzing what happened and is already making decisions to improve their course.
The interview, published by Bloomberg and later commented on by Jason Schreier, reviews a particularly busy period for the studio, marked by several major releases and a natural reorganization after that effort.
Obsidian bets on balance, planning, and sustainability
From Obsidian Entertainment, they recognize that releasing three games in the same year was not ideal, something that Josh Sawyer himself attributes to internal planning decisions rather than structural problems. The goal now is clear: space out projects, avoid team burnout, and ensure healthier development cycles for their nearly 280 developers.
- In terms of results, the studio assumes that The Outer Worlds 2 and Avowed did not meet initial projections, while Grounded 2 has established itself as a standout success. This has led to prioritizing resources better and not planning, for now, a third installment of The Outer Worlds, avoiding forcing a saga without the right context.
The well-known internal goal of five-year profitability has also been mentioned again, applied to many Xbox studios. From within, it’s seen as a financial reference framework, not as an immediate creative pressure, and has facilitated strategic decisions such as expanding the presence of some games on other platforms.
The message from Obsidian is clear: less rush, more focus, and greater team protection. A roadmap designed to reinforce the quality of their next projects and ensure a solid future within the Xbox ecosystem.
