The Castlevania saga has just received a curious surprise for retro fans. An independent developer has recreated a little-known game in the franchise and turned it into a fully playable version for Game Boy Color, something nobody expected to see in 2026.
The game in question is Castlevania: Order of Shadows, a game originally released in 2007 for Java mobile phones that went largely unnoticed. It has now returned with a new free version created by the community that reimagines the project as if it had been developed for Nintendo’s handheld console.
Castlevania: Order of Shadows returns as a Game Boy Color game
The project has been developed by the homebrew creator known as Elvies, who has rebuilt the game from scratch under the new name Castlevania: Order of Shadows – Golden Belmont.
This adaptation aims to fit better into the saga’s chronology, connecting its story with other installments like Castlevania Legends or the canceled Castlevania: Resurrection. In addition to adapting the game to the classic 8-bit style, the developer has also introduced several additional features.
Among the new features of this version are:
-
Six final bosses to defeat during the adventure.
-
Unlockable “Sister Mode” with changes to gameplay.
-
Compatibility with the famous Konami Code.
-
In-game shop to upgrade the character.
-
Special music playback mode when used on a classic Game Boy.
- Download the game from here
The game can be downloaded and played for free from today, either on emulators or on hardware compatible with Game Boy Color. For fans of the saga, it’s a retro curiosity that recovers a forgotten chapter in the history of Castlevania and transforms it into an experience much closer to the classic installments of the franchise.
