A new report from the analytics firm Newzoo suggests that the PC gaming market could surpass console market revenue before 2028, a trend that reflects the constant growth of this platform in recent years.
The data, shared through GamesIndustry, points to several key factors behind this change, including the increase in PC gaming in Asian markets and the greater stability of the market compared to the traditional console model, which relies heavily on hardware generation cycles and major releases.
PCs don’t grow in the same way as consoles, because consoles depend on generation cycles and changes in player spending”
Consoles still rely on major releases
The report also analyzes how revenue is currently being distributed within the console market.
In 2025, revenue from premium console games grew 12% year-over-year, while microtransactions saw a slight decline and subscription services grew moderately.
This reinforces the idea that the console business still relies heavily on major releases and hardware itself, something less common in the PC ecosystem.
Xbox aims to reduce the gap between PC and console
This context fits with the strategy Microsoft has been showing at GDC 2026, where the company has presented initiatives aimed at unifying development between PC and Xbox. Projects like Project Helix or the expansion of the Game Development Kit (GDK) aim to make it easier for developers to create a game once and publish it on multiple platforms within the Xbox ecosystem.
The report also notes that Game Pass can help generate interest and conversation around certain titles, although PC game sales remain stronger compared to Xbox. If Newzoo’s predictions come true, the PC market could become the primary source of revenue within the gaming industry in the coming years, which explains why major companies are increasingly betting on a multi-platform ecosystem.
