New clues are emerging about the direction of the next Xbox generation, and this time the focus is on the system’s main panel. According to a new report, Microsoft is developing significant updates for the Xbox app on PC, with the goal of making it the basis for the dashboard of its future console.
The idea is not new, but now it’s taking shape. For months, there has been talk of an Xbox based fully on Windows, and this latest report reinforces that direction: the next console would use a customized version of the Xbox Full Screen Experience, similar to what can already be seen on devices like the ROG Xbox Ally.
The next Xbox will bet on Windows and an interface designed for devices
According to information published by Windows Central, Microsoft would be collaborating with AMD so that the next Xbox uses Windows 11 as its base, but with an interface specifically designed for the living room. The core would be the Xbox app on PC, which would receive deep updates to adjust to what console gamers expect.
- The goal is clear: to make the experience natural with a controller, fluid on large screens, and far removed from the traditional use of a desktop PC. All this without giving up the advantages of Windows, such as greater system flexibility.
What would change compared to the current Xbox dashboard
| Aspect | Xbox Series (current) | Next Xbox (according to the report) |
|---|---|---|
| Base system | Proprietary Xbox system | Customized Windows 11 |
| Interface | Classic Xbox dashboard | Xbox Full Screen Experience |
| Primary use | Console closed environment | Hybrid console-PC environment |
| Access to external stores | No | Possible (Steam, Epic Games Store) |
| Focus | Traditional console | Living room experience on Windows |
According to the report, it would still be possible to stay within the Xbox ecosystem, but the system would allow access to the Windows environment if the user desires, something that would mark a significant difference from previous generations.
A continuous change, but with more ambition
Despite the attractiveness of the approach, a total break with what is known is not expected. The store and many elements of the current Xbox Series design would be maintained, although integrated into a more flexible and modern layer. However, the leap would not be as radical as the one between Xbox 360 and Xbox One.
For now, the calendar remains a mystery. Some recent reports suggest that 2027 could be an overly optimistic date due to possible memory supply problems. In any case, everything indicates that Microsoft is laying the foundations for a very different Xbox, closer to a PC than ever, but without losing its console identity.
