Microsoft is set to break all the rules with its next generation of consoles. According to Windows Central, the company plans a historic leap in the evolution of Xbox, integrating the entire Windows PC ecosystem into its new hardware. The next Xbox will allow playing all current titles from the console catalog, but also running any PC game or application, from Steam to Battle.net, without restrictions.
This new system, described as a “premium” experience, aims to become the most open and complete platform in the history of video games. It will function as a traditional console for those who want a closed experience, but also allow switching to a full Windows environment with a single click, opening the door to PlayStation titles on Steam, classic games on GOG, or even professional tools like Adobe or Microsoft Office.
A console that unifies PC, cloud, and consoles in one system
The new Xbox will be a hybrid device between console and PC, designed to bring the power of Windows to the living room without complications. It will run on new AMD silicon, offer full support for the entire Xbox Series library and previous generations, and allow running any Windows-compatible game natively.
- The president of Xbox, Sarah Bond, confirmed that this new hardware is in development and that the goal is to offer a more “premium and versatile” experience than ever. Phil Spencer has also pointed out that players should look at the portable device Xbox Ally as a hint of what’s to come, suggesting that the future of the brand lies in a platform without barriers, closer to PC, and with total freedom for the player.
No need to pay for online play
One of the biggest innovations will be the elimination of the paywall for online multiplayer, which would mark a before and after for Xbox Live. Additionally, the system will rely on artificial intelligence technologies to improve the performance of current games, including automatic resolution scaling and advanced frame generation. All this while maintaining the Xbox Play Anywhere philosophy, ensuring shared progress and licenses between console, PC, and cloud.
