Over the past few days, a rumor has gained traction about the supposed cancellation of the Xbox handheld console. The information, which began circulating on forums like NeoGAF and was picked up by several media outlets (we chose not to publish it on Generación Xbox), claimed that AMD had asked Microsoft for a minimum commitment of 10 million units to develop a custom chip. On this occasion, Jez Corden, from Windows Central, has come forward to completely deny this version.
The journalist responded directly to the original post, stating that “this is not even remotely true“. According to him, the story about the agreement with AMD has no basis and does not reflect the real reasons behind the canceled project.
Xbox focuses its efforts on the ROG Ally and portable software
Corden clarified that Microsoft’s current focus is on improving the integration of Windows with portable devices like the ROG Xbox Ally, developed in collaboration with ASUS. The Xbox team would be dedicating its resources to optimizing the operating system and interface to offer a smooth and adapted experience for this type of hardware.
These statements coincide with what Tom Warren, from The Verge, had already mentioned in June, explaining that the internal handheld console was “canceled” to focus efforts on a new Xbox software platform aimed at mobile and portable devices.
For now, Microsoft has neither confirmed nor denied the original project, but everything indicates that its strategy in the portable field involves strengthening its collaboration with ASUS and enhancing its gaming ecosystem on the ROG Ally. Meanwhile, rumors about AMD and the supposed custom chip are being dismissed by sources close to the Xbox division itself.
