The highly anticipated film inspired by Elden Ring is taking shape in secret, but the first casting leaks are starting to emerge. According to insider Jeff Sneider, actress Cailee Spaeny is in advanced negotiations to join the project directed by Alex Garland, a cult filmmaker who has expressed his admiration for the Souls universe and, specifically, the work of Hidetaka Miyazaki on several occasions.
Spaeny, who we recently saw starring in Alien: Romulus and winning the Best Actress award in Venice for Priscilla, has a long history with Garland, having worked with him on Civil War and the series Devs. This previous collaboration reinforces the rumors that her role in Elden Ring could be of enormous relevance within the film.
Cailee Spaeny could play Marika in Elden Ring
Although there is no official confirmation, all eyes are on the possibility that Cailee Spaeny could bring to life Queen Marika the Eternal, a central figure in the Elden Ring universe and the cause of the Ring’s fragmentation. Her influence permeates everything in the world of the Lands Between, making her appearance almost inevitable.
- Other logical candidates for Spaeny could be Melina, the mysterious guide without a body who accompanies the Tarnished, Ranni the Witch, a key piece in past events, or even Malenia, one of the most popular figures in the game due to her impressive design and difficulty as a final boss.
- The film is being produced by A24 in collaboration with Bandai Namco, DNA Films, Arad Productions, and George R. R. Martin himself, who remains attached to the project as a producer. Although it is unknown if Garland will also sign the script, everything indicates that the approach will be faithful to the dark and dense tone of the game, but without replicating its fragmented structure.
Given the complexity of the game and its non-linear structure, speculation suggests that the film may focus on historical events from the lore, such as the Night of the Black Knives or the Fragmentation. It is also possible that an entirely original approach will be taken, set in the Elden Ring universe but with new characters and events.
For now, production continues without a release date or official announcement of the full cast, but if Spaeny’s participation is confirmed, along with the also rumored Kit Connor and Ben Whishaw, everything points to the film being a high-prestige project, far removed from traditional video game adaptations.
