The latest Steam hardware survey for June 2025 reveals an interesting, yet unsurprising fact: 1080p remains the most widely used resolution among PC gamers. Despite 4K screens being on the market for over a decade and advancements in technologies like DLSS or FSR, playing at 3840 x 2160 remains a rarity for most.
The explanation is simple and logical: most users still play with affordable graphics cards, many of which are several years old. The price of GPUs capable of handling current games in 4K remains high, hindering the adoption of higher resolutions. In fact, even new graphics cards like the RTX 5050 or RTX 5060 come with limited 8 GB of VRAM.
Steam’s data confirms that 1080p still reigns supreme on PC
According to the report published by PCGamesN, a 54.54% of surveyed gamers use 1920 x 1080 as their primary resolution, while only 4.49% use 4K. The most interesting aspect is that the resolution that’s growing the most is 2560 x 1440 (1440p), which already accounts for 19.86% of the total. This intermediate step seems like a natural progression for those seeking better quality without having to invest in a high-end GPU.
- The report also reflects that the most popular GPUs are still mid-range or low-end, such as the RTX 3060, RTX 2060, GTX 1650, or even the veteran GTX 1060, which still occupies the 12th spot in the rankings. This confirms that, in practice, 1080p remains the optimal resolution for most current configurations.
Those who do opt for 4K often do so with screens like the LG Ultragear 32GS95UE, which allow for switching to 1080p to reach up to 480 Hz, an option especially valued by competitive gamers. However, for the majority of users, the quality-performance ratio of 1080p remains unbeatable in 2025.
