The arrival of Final Fantasy VII Remake on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S has finally allowed for a direct technical comparison between platforms, and Digital Foundry has already published its first conclusions after analyzing the demo available this week. The focus is on resolution, performance, and image quality, with quite clear results… and some unexpected surprises.
The analysis confirms that the Xbox version not only meets but also aligns point by point with what was previously seen on PlayStation 5, while Series S shows a more adjusted approach that, despite this, leaves interesting readings compared to other platforms.
Resolution and Graphics Modes on Xbox Series X and Series S
According to Digital Foundry, Xbox Series X offers exactly the same visual configuration as PS5 in both available modes. The graphics mode aims for 4K (2160p) at 30 FPS, while the performance mode works at 1512p at 60 FPS, with a stable framerate lock in both cases during initial tests. No differences are appreciated in pixel count, effect quality, level of detail, or general visual features compared to Sony’s console.
On Xbox Series S, the approach is more contained but coherent:
-
1440p at 30 FPS in graphics mode
-
1080p at 60 FPS in performance mode
The graphics settings are comparable to those of Series X and PS5, although adapted to the system’s lower power. The performance also remains stable, something especially relevant when dealing with a demanding title developed in Unreal Engine 4.
- The most striking note in the analysis comes when comparing Series S to Switch 2. Despite Nintendo’s console operating at a lower resolution (1080p), Digital Foundry observes that in certain scenes the image is sharper than the 1440p of Series S, possibly due to the use of AI upscaling (DLSS) on Switch 2 compared to the traditional TAA of UE4 on Xbox. A visible difference, especially in static images.
Digital Foundry clarifies that this is just a first contact with the demo and that they will publish a more in-depth analysis of these versions throughout January, once they have completed the game on all platforms. For now, the conclusion is clear: Series X is on par with PS5, while Series S offers a solid result, although with particularities in the final image quality compared to other upscaling solutions.
