A new report indicates that talks between Microsoft, Take-Two, and Embracer, the owner of Crystal Dynamics, ended in a wave of layoffs at the studio last month, with exact figures still unknown but reportedly quite significant.
Crystal Dynamics, along with California-based The Initiative, was in the midst of developing Perfect Dark, a highly anticipated title by the community that would mark the reboot of the popular franchise, announced back in 2020 during the Xbox Summer Showcase. Unfortunately, as has been made public, the game was canceled, but efforts to reverse that decision were not lacking.
The Final Fate of Perfect Dark
Apparently, Take-Two attempted to negotiate with Microsoft and Embracer to finance the development and publication of the game, but the agreement did not come to fruition. One of the points that were never resolved was the ownership rights to the franchise going forward.
The future of the saga currently seems sealed in some executive’s drawer, but after years of waiting, the community still holds out hope for some bureaucratic miracle to see Joanna Dark on the screen once again.
