Bethesda has confirmed one of the most significant updates since the release of Starfield. The space RPG will soon receive a major free update packed with content and changes to various game systems, designed for both those still exploring the universe and those who want to return after several months.

Although one of the most talked-about announcements has been the game’s arrival on a new platform, the fact is that the main focus is on everything that the Free Lanes update brings, a patch that introduces new mechanics, more customization options, and several community-requested improvements.

The Free Lanes update changes several Starfield mechanics

The Free Lanes update will arrive on April 7, 2026 and will be available to all players, including those who enjoy the game through Xbox Game Pass. Among its most notable features is the introduction of more free interplanetary travel, a function that will allow players to move directly between planets while piloting their ship.

• This system introduces a kind of magnetic effect that helps guide the ship towards celestial bodies, making landing easier and making space exploration more dynamic than before.
• The patch also expands arsenal customization. Weapons can be modified with more freedom using new upgrades, using a new resource called X-Tech, which will also be used to unlock new ship modules.

In addition, the update will add new dungeons and points of interest scattered throughout the game’s universe. These areas will feature enemies with special modifiers that alter their behavior or stats, such as shield bonuses or increased attack speed.

Outposts will also receive significant improvements. From now on, there will be shared storage, allowing players to access stored items from any connected chest.

Among the new playable features are:

• Moon Jumper, a new vehicle for exploring planetary surfaces.

• A customizable companion robot that will accompany the player on their adventures.

• Improvements to New Game+, allowing players to keep certain items when starting a new game.

In addition to this free update, Bethesda has also announced the Terran Armada DLC, an expansion focused on new missions where players will have to face a robotic threat spreading across space and will have the opportunity to acquire large ships.

During the announcement, it was also confirmed that the game will arrive on PlayStation 5 on April 7, 2026, coinciding with the release of this major update. However, all the content and improvements of the patch will also be available to those already playing on Xbox and PC.
