After years of development and multiple delays, we finally have clear news about one of the most anticipated projects in the Star Citizen universe. Cloud Imperium Games has officially confirmed that the Squadron 42 campaign will launch in 2026 and will offer over 40 hours of gameplay focused on a single-player narrative experience.
The project, which began taking shape over a decade ago, had been in an advanced production phase for some time. In October 2023, the studio already confirmed that the game was “complete” in terms of content and had entered a long polishing period. Now, that roadmap is becoming more concrete with a clear launch window.
Squadron 42 aims for 2026 with an extensive and carefully crafted campaign
The founder and director of Cloud Imperium Games, Chris Roberts, has reiterated that Squadron 42 will soon enter beta phase before its final launch. According to Roberts, completing the main campaign will take over 40 hours, a figure that puts the game on par with major narrative-driven productions in the genre.
The director has also highlighted the project’s level of ambition, emphasizing aspects such as the script, performance capture, character design, environments, ships, lighting, sound, and cinematics. All of this is part of a self-contained and independent experience, designed to showcase the potential of the Star Citizen universe from a purely narrative perspective.
In parallel, Cloud Imperium Games maintains its goal of launching the version 1.0 of Star Citizen between 2027 and 2028, once Squadron 42 has been released. For now, the studio does not plan a prolonged marketing campaign, so it’s likely that more details will be revealed as the campaign’s actual launch approaches.
