The announcement of Helldivers 2 for Xbox Series has sparked an unexpected move in Sony’s strategy, but it has also ignited debate about whether this will be an isolated case… or the gateway for more PlayStation games on Xbox consoles.
Many users have been wondering for days if the arrival of the successful cooperative shooter on the rival platform is just the beginning of a new era. It’s not a situation like Death Stranding – where Kojima regained the rights – or a forced case like MLB The Show, where a league decision pushed Sony to expand. On this occasion, Helldivers 2 has been published directly by PlayStation Publishing LLC, making it clear that it was a voluntary and internal decision.
Sony opens the door to more games on Xbox… but it’s still too early to name names
In search of answers, French content creator Julien Chièze contacted Sony to find out if there are plans to publish more titles on Xbox. Although the response was brief, it did hint at a clear intention on the part of the company:
Sony Interactive Entertainment’s current strategy is to evaluate which video game products allow us to expand our user base and offer the possibility of cross-play. We will carefully examine each of our live service titles, case by case.
The statement would rule out, for now, the arrival of single-player games like Spider-Man 2 or God of War Ragnarok, but opens the door to other multiplayer titles, especially those designed as live service games. If Helldivers 2 performs well on Xbox, it wouldn’t be far-fetched to think about future additions, even new IPs to be announced.
The success of Sea of Thieves on PS5 was a precedent for Microsoft, and Helldivers 2 could be for Sony. If both paths continue to cross, 2026 could be a key year for the multi-platform future of major publishers.
