A new trademark filing by SEGA has reignited theories surrounding the Sonic the Hedgehog universe. The Japanese company has submitted a patent related to Shadow the Hedgehog, one of the franchise’s most popular characters, and fans have been quick to speculate about the possibility of a remake of the 2005 game for PlayStation 2, GameCube, and Xbox.
The discovery has spread like wildfire on social media, where the new trademark filing in Japan was first mentioned. Since then, the community has filled the internet with theories pointing to a possible re-release of the title, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the game in 2026.
Remake on the way or just a simple rights renewal?
The title Shadow the Hedgehog, remembered for its darker tone and action-packed gameplay with guns, was an unusual experiment within the Sonic saga. The coincidence of the trademark filing with the anniversary and the character’s recent appearances in various media has led many to believe that SEGA might be preparing a remake or new installment centered around Shadow.
Other fans point out that companies often register names without any concrete projects in mind. In this case, the move could be due to a simple legal renewal of the name before the game’s anniversary.
Interest in Shadow has resurfaced in recent months. The character appeared in the 2024 movie Sonic the Hedgehog 3, where he was portrayed by Keanu Reeves, and has also starred in recent collaborations in Fortnite with outfits inspired by the character. All this fuels the idea that SEGA might be preparing something bigger around him.
