The huge success of the open beta of Battlefield 6 has restored confidence in a saga that had been going through tough times. However, in parallel to the positive impressions, rumors are starting to emerge about what Electronic Arts plans for the future of the franchise.
According to a sector analyst, the company’s plan would involve transforming Battlefield into a series with annual releases, something that, if confirmed, would mean a radical change in the way players have historically enjoyed these large-scale shooters.
EA and the future of Battlefield: Heading towards annual releases?
The information comes from Michael Pachter, who claims to have received details directly from a high-ranking Electronic Arts executive. According to his statements, within a period of approximately five years, the series could adopt a model similar to that of Call of Duty, with three studios working in parallel to guarantee a new game every season.
A model more similar to Call of Duty
The similarity with Call of Duty would be evident if this plan materializes. Activision has been using a studio rotation system for over a decade, where each team is in charge of developing a release while others work on the next one, thus ensuring a new game every year without compromising deadlines.
The model also relies on a permanent Battle Royale, Warzone, which acts as a link between main releases and keeps the player base active. EA, according to the rumor, would want to apply a nearly identical strategy with Battlefield, combining annual releases with a free mode in parallel to keep the saga in the spotlight at all times.
However, it’s worth being cautious. The source is not exactly the most reliable in the industry, and for now, there is no official confirmation from EA. What does seem clear is that, with the good reception of the Battlefield 6 beta, the company is willing to bet big on keeping the franchise at the forefront for many years to come.
