A few years ago, we witnessed the birth of a series that surprised more than one of us, starting with its artistic style and featuring memorable characters. Additionally, it had a very dark and terrifying narrative, set in a surreal world.
Little Nightmares arrived in 2017 and left many with pleasant sensations. At that time, the responsible parties were Tarsier Studios, who made a pact with Bandai Namco to develop the first two installments of the series, although they lost the rights to their work to the Japanese giant.
Hopes seemed to have faded regarding seeing a third installment, but all this changed thanks to Bandai Namco approaching Supermassive Games, who are in charge of bringing us the new sequel: Little Nightmares III.
Technical Section
If this series has something, it’s the ability to tell part of its narrative through its visuals and that characteristic artistic design. That is, we will be in a completely decadent and dark environment most of the time, preserving the essence of the first two installments.
The essence of the saga has not been lost, and despite the change of team in charge of the project, it can be seen that what they used to offer us previously was respected. One of the qualities of the title comes with the use of current technologies, elevating its audiovisual proposal.
Two new characters are in charge of accompanying us on the adventure, and they look great and very detailed. But we cannot leave aside each scenario that is presented to us, being more decadent than the previous one and showing us a harsh reality.
Additionally, the enemies and bosses continue to offer us their high doses of terror and mystery. It’s not a colorful world; it’s a universe lacking joy, and that’s what represents part of the identity of Little Nightmares, something that has been completely preserved.
In terms of sound, it doesn’t disappoint. We find those anguishing melodies and those touches of anxiety and loneliness that accompany each moment. It’s worth noting that its Spanish dubbing meets expectations, at least in terms of communicating certain instructions. Let’s remember that the characters don’t speak as such, maintaining the atmosphere of mystery.
As I usually highlight, the game features Xbox Play Anywhere, which means you can play on PC or Xbox and continue with your progress on the system of your choice. This is a substantial incentive for us, the players. In my case, I played on both platforms and it works wonderfully, without technical issues.
Gameplay
A new story puts us in front of a pair of different characters. Mono and Six will no longer be there; now we have new blood in the lineage of this series, which, although it may seem contradictory, we believe the twist was expected after the closure of its second installment.
Here we will be Low and Alone, a duo that cannot be separated from each other, and this gives rise to the cooperative gameplay, since you can be one of them, having a companion in your adventure. Although, unfortunately, you can only play online and not locally with another person. Fortunately, the game features a friend pass, although it’s something good, you can only share with another person in the same ecosystem, that is, it doesn’t have crossplay between other platforms, which would have been great.
In my case, I experienced the game solo, choosing Low, who has a bow with automatic aiming and will be a tool to get rid of enemies or activate switches, being useful in different types of moments.
On the other hand, Alone is a girl who carries a wrench on her back, which will be useful for breaking walls, blocks, and any type of obstacle that requires its use. She will be our complement, and between both characters, they sustain what happens on screen.
Something I understood when starting my game is that the character by your side will be your help and will facilitate your progress. In some cases, it became evident that the other protagonist would stare or point at something, making you understand that was the way. This doesn’t appeal to me, as it takes away from exploring more or going on your own without a guide.
Low and Alone need each other. There will be boxes and challenges that cannot be overcome alone, and it’s necessary for both to act. This adds a new layer of depth to the game, without becoming too complex. Additionally, we will have other types of artifacts to progress through the levels.
Each scenario is a big puzzle that needs to be solved to move forward, although everything is adorned with exquisite ambiance. And nothing would be the same without the collectibles, which are discovered in hidden corners and away from the main path, so some exploration will be necessary to find them.
The environments have traps or lead you to them, accompanied by minor enemies that you must get rid of or escape from. Although, as in other installments, we will have the bosses of each chapter, who will stalk us and have their closure with us.
The game delivers what it has to offer. It feels like a continuation, and it’s obvious, since they opted for the safe bet, taking into account that the original creators were not in charge. Said that, it’s not a terrible game; perhaps the fans had very high expectations and were disappointed.
Duration
Well, despite having a very entertaining game that keeps you hooked during the hours it offers, it has become quite short. Between 4 and 6 hours to finish it, that’s without collecting everything it has to offer.
Keep in mind that the game remains faithful in this aspect compared to previous installments; it lasts long enough to finish it in one session. Of course, there are also objects and things that we leave behind on the way. As it is, it leaves a bittersweet taste, wanting to continue with our adventure.
On the other hand, the game has replay value if you want to play with a friend or companion, although keep in mind that this is only online, and that cuts off some of the desire to sit down with your children, partner, or companion. As it is, in this section, the game fell short.
Conclusion
A third installment that has delighted me, just like the first two games. It maintains that tense atmosphere, loaded with emotions and at the same time gloomy. I know, perhaps some of what its creators achieved has been lost, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad game; on the contrary, I had a great time.
There are decisions that harm the game, such as the fact that the cooperative is only available online, and that there is no crossplay with other platforms. Additionally, we have a character that facilitates things for us to some extent during our game.
However, they take advantage of the technical aspects, using the new consoles to make the title look very good, and it has the Xbox Play Anywhere seal, and you know what that means. Weighing everything, I can tell you that it’s a pleasant experience and that it’s worth continuing with the series despite its changes. A recommended game within the Xbox catalog.
